What is silicone sealant?

Acidic silicone sealant and neutral silicone sealant are both used in construction. However, acidic silicone sealant is slightly corrosive to steel, cement, stone, etc. due to the presence of acidic components, so its application is limited. It is generally only used in the installation of aluminum alloy glass doors and windows. Good quality sealant will not age after 20 years of use. If the quality is poor, aging phenomena such as cracking, brittleness and shedding will appear in 2-3 years.

There are many performance parameters of silicone sealant: odor, breakage rate, tensile strength, temperature resistance, oil resistance, etc. Different brands produced by different manufacturers vary greatly in these aspects. Neutral silicone sealant is afraid of being exposed to water before it dries. It smells a bit unpleasant and is prone to yellowing and discoloration. In addition, the curing time is a little longer than that od acidic ones, and the smell is much smaller than that of acidic ones.

Silicone sealant can also be divided into: sealant, weather resistant adhesive and structural adhesive.

Sealant is used for the gaps between glass and aluminum profiles, doors, windows and wals. Weather resistant adhesive is mainly used on curtain walls. Structural adhesive is mainly used for the connection between the steel structure and insulating glass of glass curtain walls.

Arranged by price: sealant is the cheapest, then weather resistant adhesive, and finally structural adhesive.

Acidic silicone sealant is suitable for the installation of aluminum alloy glass doors and windows, with high elasticity, strong anti-aging properties and fast curing.

Neutral silicone sealant is used more frequently outside doors, windows and curtain walls because of its high strength. It is used to seal the joints of the floor, sides and roof of automobiles, shipbuilding and railway passenger cars. Neutral curing, non-corrosive metal, coated glass, concrete, ceramics, marble, granite and othe building materials, with excellent weather resistance, used for joint of glass, stone, aluminum plates.
